About the project

Artisanal Restoration build a new elevated deck and stairway to create a durable, attractive entrance connecting the home to the courtyard. The project began by pouring concrete footings and installing pressure-treated support posts anchored to the footings with steel post bases, lifting the wood above ground level to prevent moisture damage and extend the life of the structure. The deck’s structural framework includes protective joist tape applied along the tops of the joists to guard against moisture intrusion and reduce long-term wear.

Composite decking was installed over the frame for long-term durability and low maintenance, and the exposed rim joists were concealed with a finished trim board to give the deck a clean, finished appearance. Custom stairs were then built by hand using pressure-treated 2x12 stringers, with composite treads and risers installed over the same protective joist tape used on the deck framing. Each tread was carefully assembled with a decorative layout: darker composite boards form a mitered border around the perimeter while a lighter board fills the center, creating a refined, trim-like detail. The project was completed with a black painted steel railing around the deck and a matching stair banister, providing both safety and a crisp visual finish.
